UpWork’s weekly roundup included my article for The Huffington Post on the 12 tips for being productive as a stay at home freelancer. When you have no one watching over you and a house full of distractions like television and social media not to mention the refrigerator and sofa, it may seem like freelancing is not the best idea for those who don’t know how to work independently. However, it can be done with the right level of focus, self-motivation, and discipline.
As I mention in using my own experience with this type of environment, I focus on setting a schedule, starting as early as possible, getting dressed for “work,” and giving myself rewards for completing certain projects. Everyone needs a break so you have to find the reward that works for you. I like catching up on one episode of a favorite television show while you may prefer a trip to the gym, a meal with a friend, or a quick shopping spree.
It’s a flexible job but one that still has to have some framework like a separate office space and agenda with specific priorities to achieve each day. After you have those things in place, then you can really enjoy the freedom that working from home brings.
