Gifting to your boss during the holidays can seemingly be one of the most stressful experiences—but it shouldn’t be! Just like any other type of gift giving occasion, it’s all about listening and giving them something they’ll truly enjoy. Of course, this relationship is a little unique. The Muse asked me and 10 other bosses what we like to get from our employees, and I used this opportunity to tout the benefits of doing good for others.
A couple of years ago, one of my employees decided that he wasn’t going to engage in gift giving at work. Instead, he adopted a family in need. He took charge, buying all the gifts, and invited everyone from work to go with him for the delivery. Giving is an incredibly joyous event, and it’s a gesture I’ll never forget. Since that time, we’ve encouraged everyone at the office to give to those in need if they want to celebrate.
Other suggestions include assembling a scrapbook of thanks (especially great for startups), or to focus on unique gifts like a homemade dessert from your heritage or a small gift when visiting locations around the world.
