Inc. is always offering bits of wisdom on how to ensure a better work environment. Today, I was featured as an expert on using emotional intelligence to handle toxicity by Inc Magazine.

You’re bound to face toxic people in life, but it’s how you handle these situations (and people!) that matters. For those with solid emotional intelligence, a few go-to tactics are key. Establishing boundaries is a must, and also ensures you control potentially toxic situations. Not allowing anyone to dictate “joy limits” is another strategy. When you’re emotionally intelligent, you’re also a master of rising above difficult situations.

Focusing on solutions, rather than dwelling on problems, is another emotionally intelligent tactic. Identify your support sources and lean on them when necessary—like when toxic people are in your midst. Staying aware of your surroundings, as well as self-awareness, can keep you sharp and stop toxicity from impacting you.

Finally, embrace forgiveness but know that it doesn’t automatically come with forgetting. Instead, keep your energy for more important instances and opportunities. Being emotionally intelligent is often dubbed “being the bigger person,” but in reality everyone benefits: The one who handles toxic people with ease, their loved ones, their co-workers, employees and even their morning barista.
